Girls Hostel project

In April 2018 work started on our girls hostel. The building is designed as a dual purpose building; a hostel for 100 girls and by day a small kindergarten.

We identified back in 2016 that there was a real issue with accommodation for teenage girls attending the local secondary school. Many secondary school children live a long distance away from their nearest school. They have to find accommodation locally in order to attend school. With very limited money girls often find either they cannot afford lodgings or they are mistreated in the accommodation they can afford. Over 80 girls currently sleep in 2 disused classrooms at the local Lyandembela Secondary school, many will have done this for over 2 years. Tragically there have been cases of rape and unwanted pregnancy amongst these girls.

The purpose of the hostel is to provide a safe place where secondary school girls can flourish and fulfil their potential and most importantly a place where they can feel secure.

The project is funded by Walser’s Tanzania Charity but once complete the hostel will be operated by the local parish.

The Project Manager running the build is Adorn Nyang’ango, a civil engineering graduate from Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology. Adorn has been sponsored by our charity since primary school and is testament to the success of our educational sponsorship scheme. We are immensely proud of Adorn and his achievements, his expertise in managing the project will ensure the hostel is a high quality facility for the community of Ifunda.
